Walks in Vienna

Starting with this post we will introduce walks through Vienna off the beaten touristic tracks but no less interesting. Discover Vienna from a different point of view!

8th & 9th district - Following the footprints of Stefan Zweig

Starting point for this walking tour is Pension BARONESSE. From here you walk to Kochgasse 8, where Stefan Zweig had a small apartment. Continue to the district's museum (Bezirksmuseum Josefstadt) where the Stefan Zweig archive is located. Please check the opening hours in advance with our receptionists, as it is not open all the time.

From the museum you then walk to Schottentor 14, where a plaque marks the birthplace of Stefan Zweig. Only a few minutes away, in Wasagasse 10 is where he went to highschool from 1892 to 1900. This is indicated by another plaque at the school's main entrance. Among others, also Friedrich Torberg and Erich Fried attended this school.

The 8th district - Josefstadt: Stefan Zweig had a close relationship with this district. He lived here during his studies (Tulpengasse and Buchfeldgasse). Zweig remembered the small apartment in Kochgasse always fondly, because the daughter of Goethe's personal physician used to live in the apartment above him. Zweig was a great admirer of Goethe and wrote about it in his posthumously published autobiography, "The World of Yesterday". Florinanigasse, just a few blocks away, is also mentioned in his novel "Beware of Pity".
