Heimito von Doderer - Strudlhof Steps

HEIMITO VON DODERER

No other poet has characterized a special place in Vienna to such an extent. His novel "The Strudlhof Steps" is even named after this place. In 1910 the staircase was built in Art Nouveau style and served as a connection between Liechtensteinstrasse and Währingerstrasse. The hidden location makes the staircase a little mystery by itself. Doderer has always lived in the neighbourhood and with his novel he set a momument for the staircase and himself. Doderer's novel gives a very detailed description of Vienna, an overview about the character and life of Austrias middle class and noble gentry. For the main character, Rene Stangeler, the staircase acts as his "stage of life". The novel starts with a poem about the staircase - today it can be read on a marble plaque on the bottom of the stairs. Standing in front of the staircase you can understand why Doderer made it into a "stage of life".
You can visit the District Museum Alsergrund an view Doderer's study. In addition you can visit the Erich Fried room in the museum. As a bonus they also have some rare pictures from Artur Schnitzler's life.
